Job Overview

ICOMOS Mozambique is seeking a passionate Marine Archaeologist to lead underwater excavation projects along the Quissanga coastline. This role combines fieldwork with research to uncover and document historical shipwrecks and submerged artifacts linked to Mozambique’s maritime trade routes. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct underwater archaeological surveys and excavations in Quissanga’s coastal waters.
  • Document findings through 3D mapping, photography, and artifact cataloging.
  • Collaborate with local historians and conservationists to interpret findings.
  • Prepare reports and presentations for academic and public audiences.
  • Ensure compliance with international cultural heritage preservation standards.

Required Skills

  • Expertise in marine archaeology and historical shipwreck analysis.
  • Proficiency in underwater excavation techniques and dive safety protocols.
  • Experience with GIS and 3D modeling software for site documentation.
  • Strong communication skills for stakeholder engagement.
  • Fluency in Portuguese and English.

Education

Candidates must hold a Master’s degree in Archaeology, Maritime History, or a related field. A PhD is a strong advantage.

Experience

3–5 years of professional experience in marine archaeology, including fieldwork in coastal or underwater environments.

Salary

200,000 – 300,000 SSP annually, commensurate with experience.
