Job Overview

The Satellite Imagery Analyst will play a pivotal role in processing, analyzing, and interpreting high-resolution satellite imagery to support various applications in Mozambique’s dynamic environmental and developmental landscape. Key Responsibilities

  • Process and analyze multi-spectral and hyperspectral satellite imagery using advanced remote sensing software and techniques
  • Develop and implement automated image classification algorithms for land cover mapping, crop type identification, and vegetation health assessment
  • Monitor agricultural zones, forest cover changes, and coastal dynamics to support environmental conservation and resource management initiatives
  • Create detailed geospatial reports, maps, and visualizations for government agencies, NGOs, and private sector clients
  • Collaborate with field teams to validate satellite-derived data through ground truthing exercises and field surveys
  • Support disaster response efforts by providing rapid damage assessment and situational mapping during natural emergencies
  • Integrate satellite imagery with GIS databases, drone data, and other geospatial sources for comprehensive analysis
  • Train and mentor junior analysts and provide technical guidance on remote sensing methodologies
  • Stay current with emerging satellite technologies, analytical tools, and industry best practices
  • Present findings to stakeholders and communicate complex technical information to non-technical audiences

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in remote sensing software packages including ENVI, ERDAS IMAGINE, or similar platforms
  • Advanced experience with GIS software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, or equivalent applications
  • Strong programming skills in Python, R, or other analytical languages for image processing automation
  • Understanding of photogrammetry principles and 3D terrain modeling techniques
  • Knowledge of machine learning and deep learning approaches for image classification
  • Experience with change detection analysis and time-series satellite data interpretation
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilities
  • Strong communication and presentation skills for diverse audiences
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams

Education

A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Geomatics, Remote Sensing, Geographic Information Systems, Environmental Science, Earth Sciences, or a closely related discipline is required. Advanced coursework or certification in remote sensing, image analysis, or geospatial technologies is highly desirable. Candidates with equivalent practical experience in satellite imagery analysis will also be considered.

Experience

Minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience in satellite imagery analysis, remote sensing, or geospatial data processing is required. Previous experience working on projects related to agriculture, forestry, environmental monitoring, urban planning, or disaster management in African contexts is strongly preferred. Familiarity with Mozambique’s geography, ecosystems, and developmental challenges will be considered a significant advantage.
