Job Overview
The Community Relations Manager will lead Rio Tinto’s community engagement strategy in Tete, aligning corporate objectives with the aspirations of local residents, NGOs, and government agencies. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a comprehensive community engagement plan that aligns with Rio Tinto’s sustainability framework.
- Facilitate regular consultations with community leaders, NGOs, and local authorities to gather feedback and address concerns.
- Coordinate community development projects, including education, health, infrastructure, and livelihood initiatives.
- Monitor and report on social impact metrics, ensuring compliance with ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) standards.
- Manage a team of community officers and external consultants, providing guidance and performance evaluations.
- Prepare and present quarterly community relations reports to senior management and external stakeholders.
- Handle grievance mechanisms, ensuring timely resolution and documentation of all community issues.
- Collaborate with the communications department to produce transparent and culturally appropriate messaging.
- Support the acquisition and permitting process by providing social due diligence insights.
- Represent Rio Tinto at industry forums, government meetings, and community events.
Required Skills
- Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills with a proven ability to build trust across diverse stakeholder groups.
- Strong analytical abilities to assess social impact data and translate findings into actionable strategies.
- Fluency in Portuguese and English; knowledge of local languages (e.g., Sena, Swahili) is an advantage.
- Project management expertise, including budgeting, scheduling, and risk mitigation.
- Deep understanding of Mozambique’s mining regulations, community development policies, and ESG standards.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and community engagement software tools.
- Ability to work independently and lead cross‑functional teams in a dynamic environment.
Education
A Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Community Development, Anthropology, or a related discipline is required. A Master’s degree or relevant certifications in ESG, Project Management, or Corporate Social Responsibility will be considered an asset.
Experience
Minimum of five years’ experience in community relations, stakeholder engagement, or social development within the mining or natural resources sector. Demonstrated success in managing large‑scale community projects and handling complex grievance processes is essential.
Salary
The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary ranging from SSP 250,000 to SSP 350,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Additional performance‑based incentives and benefits are part of the total compensation package.
