Job Overview
This role leads policy development for sustainable fisheries management in northern Mozambique. The position requires designing frameworks to balance economic growth with marine conservation, engaging stakeholders from artisanal fishing communities to national regulators. Key focus areas include combating illegal fishing, promoting gender equity in fisheries, and integrating climate adaptation strategies into policy frameworks.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement national fisheries policy recommendations aligned with SDG 14 (Life Below Water)
- Conduct stakeholder consultations with fishing cooperatives, local governments, and conservation organizations
- Design monitoring systems to track compliance with marine protected area regulations
- Prepare policy briefs for Mozambican Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture
- Coordinate cross-border initiatives with Tanzanian and Malawian fisheries agencies
Required Skills
- Expertise in fisheries governance frameworks (e.g., FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries)
- Strong analytical skills for fisheries data interpretation
- Bilingual proficiency in Portuguese and English
- Experience with GIS mapping for marine resource management
- Proven ability to mediate between commercial and artisanal fishing interests
Education
- Master’s degree in Environmental Policy, Marine Biology, or related field
- Certification in fisheries management or environmental law preferred
Experience
- 3-5 years in fisheries policy development or environmental governance
- Previous work in Mozambique or other Southern African countries
Salary
250,000 – 400,000 SSP monthly, commensurate with experience
