Job Overview

The Coal Operations Manager will lead the day‑to‑day management of coal extraction, processing, and logistics at the Moatize site. Reporting to the Regional Mining Director, you will be responsible for optimizing production efficiency, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations, and driving continuous improvement initiatives. This role is central to BHP’s strategy of delivering reliable coal supply while maintaining operational excellence. The successful candidate will collaborate with cross‑functional teams, including engineering, maintenance, health & safety, and community relations, to achieve production targets and uphold BHP’s reputation as a world‑class mining operator. Key Responsibilities

• Oversee all aspects of coal mining operations, including drilling, blasting, loading, and haulage.
• Develop and implement production plans to meet monthly and annual output targets.
• Ensure strict adherence to health, safety, and environmental standards, conducting regular audits and risk assessments.
• Manage a multidisciplinary team of supervisors, engineers, and frontline workers, fostering a culture of safety and performance.
• Coordinate with maintenance teams to minimize equipment downtime and optimize asset reliability.
• Monitor and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) such as production volume, cost per tonne, and safety metrics.
• Lead continuous improvement projects using Lean, Six Sigma, or other methodologies to enhance efficiency.
• Engage with local communities and government agencies to maintain positive stakeholder relationships.
• Prepare and present operational reports to senior management and external partners.
• Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and BHP’s internal policies.

Required Skills

• Strong leadership and people‑management capabilities.
• Proven expertise in open‑pit coal mining operations.
• Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills.
• Ability to interpret technical data and make data‑driven decisions.
• Effective communication and stakeholder‑engagement skills.
• Knowledge of safety standards such as ISO 45001 and environmental regulations.
• Proficiency with mining software (e.g., MineSight, SAP PM).
• Fluency in English; Portuguese is an advantage.

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a related discipline is required. Advanced certifications in project management, safety, or operational excellence are highly regarded.

Experience

Applicants must have 5‑8 years of progressive experience in coal mining operations, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or managerial role. Experience in large‑scale mining projects in Africa is a distinct advantage.

Salary

The position offers a competitive salary range of 300,000 to 500,000 SSP per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Additional performance‑based incentives are available.
