Job Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled Actuarial Data Science Specialist to join our dynamic actuarial team in Beira, Mozambique. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement advanced machine learning models for insurance pricing optimization and risk classification using Python, R, and SQL programming languages
- Conduct comprehensive actuarial analysis of insurance portfolios, including claims frequency analysis, severity modeling, and loss development studies
- Design and deploy predictive analytics solutions for customer behavior modeling, churn prediction, and cross-selling opportunity identification
- Collaborate with underwriting teams to integrate data science insights into risk selection criteria and pricing guidelines
- Perform statistical analysis of large-scale insurance datasets to identify trends, patterns, and anomalies affecting claims experience
- Create automated reporting dashboards and visualization tools using Tableau, Power BI, and other business intelligence platforms
- Support the development of new insurance products through rigorous actuarial modeling and market segmentation analysis
- Validate and calibrate actuarial models to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal quality standards
- Mentor junior analysts and contribute to knowledge sharing initiatives within the actuarial department
- Stay current with emerging data science techniques, insurance industry trends, and regulatory developments affecting actuarial practice
Required Skills
- Advanced proficiency in statistical programming languages including Python, R, and SQL for data manipulation and model development
- Strong foundation in classical and Bayesian statistical methodologies with practical experience in insurance applications
- Experience with machine learning frameworks such as scikit-learn, TensorFlow, and XGBoost for predictive modeling
- Deep understanding of actuarial concepts including life contingencies, credibility theory, and loss reserving methodologies
- Excellent problem-solving abilities with capacity to handle complex, ambiguous analytical challenges
- Strong communication skills for presenting technical findings to non-technical stakeholders and executive leadership
- Proven track record of delivering data-driven solutions that positively impact business performance metrics
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting tight deadlines and quality standards
- Familiarity with insurance industry data sources, regulatory frameworks, and market dynamics in African markets
- Professional actuarial certification or progress toward actuarial credentials is highly advantageous
Education
Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in Actuarial Science, Statistics, Data Science, Mathematics, or a closely related quantitative discipline from a recognized university. A Bachelor’s degree with exceptional relevant experience may be considered as an alternative qualification pathway.
Experience
Minimum of five years of progressive experience in an actuarial, data science, or quantitative analytics role within the insurance industry. Prior experience in pricing analytics, risk modeling, or predictive analytics for insurance products is required. Experience working with large-scale datasets and cloud-based analytics platforms is preferred.
