Job Overview

Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement comprehensive aquaculture development programs aligned with Mozambique’s national fisheries strategy and FAO guidelines
• Conduct technical assessments of potential aquaculture sites including water quality analysis, soil suitability evaluation, and environmental impact screening
• Provide expert guidance on pond construction, fish hatchery management, feed formulation, and disease prevention protocols
• Develop and deliver training programs for local fish farmers covering sustainable aquaculture techniques and best management practices
• Establish monitoring and evaluation systems to track aquaculture project performance and document outcomes for stakeholders
• Collaborate with research institutions to introduce improved fish species suitable for Mozambique’s climate and market demands
• Prepare detailed reports on aquaculture sector developments, funding proposals, and policy recommendations for government consideration
• Facilitate partnerships between local communities, private sector investors, and international development agencies

Required Skills

• Proven expertise in tropical aquaculture systems including pond culture, cage culture, and integrated fish farming methodologies
• Strong analytical capabilities for conducting feasibility studies, cost-benefit analyses, and environmental impact assessments
• Excellent communication skills with ability to train diverse audiences including rural fishing communities and government officials
• Proficiency in project management methodologies including planning, budgeting, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation
• Knowledge of Mozambique’s regulatory framework for aquaculture and fisheries management
• Strong interpersonal skills for building partnerships with multiple stakeholders across different sectors
• Fluency in Portuguese and English languages for effective communication with international partners

Education

Candidates must hold a Master’s degree in Aquaculture, Marine Biology, Fisheries Science, or a closely related discipline from a recognized university. Additional certifications in sustainable aquaculture practices, environmental management, or project management will be considered an advantage. Prior experience working with international development organizations or governmental fisheries agencies is highly desirable.

Experience

Minimum of five years of progressive experience in aquaculture development, fisheries management, or related field is required. Candidates should demonstrate practical experience in designing and implementing aquaculture projects in developing countries, preferably within Southern Africa. Experience working with small-scale fish farmers and rural communities is essential. Prior involvement in donor-funded development projects will be advantageous.
