The Aquaculture Development Officer role is part of a new initiative to expand responsible aquaculture practices along the Nampula coastline, supporting local fisheries while protecting marine ecosystems.

Job Overview

This position is part of IUCN’s Mozambique Jobs initiative to strengthen food security and economic opportunities through sustainable aquaculture. The officer will lead community-based aquaculture projects, conduct technical training, and collaborate with local stakeholders to develop environmentally responsible fish farming systems. The role requires fieldwork in coastal communities and coordination with government agencies and international partners.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement aquaculture development programs in Nampula region
• Conduct feasibility studies for new fish farming sites
• Provide technical training to local fish farmers on sustainable practices
• Monitor water quality and fish health in project sites
• Prepare project reports and impact assessments
• Collaborate with local authorities on regulatory compliance

Required Skills

• Expertise in aquaculture systems and marine biology
• Strong project management and community engagement skills
• Proficiency in GIS mapping software and data analysis tools
• Bilingual fluency in Portuguese and local languages
• Experience with environmental impact assessments

Education

Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Aquaculture, Environmental Science, Marine Biology, or related disciplines. A Master’s Degree in Sustainable Development or Fisheries Management is highly advantageous.

Experience

Minimum 3-5 years of professional experience in aquaculture development, coastal resource management, or similar fields. Experience working in Mozambique or other East African countries is preferred.

Salary

2,500,000 – 3,500,000 MZN per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
