Job Overview

This role is critical to ensuring compliance with national and international mining safety regulations. The Mining Safety Compliance Officer will collaborate with operational teams to implement safety protocols, conduct audits, and mitigate risks in high-altitude and underground mining environments. The position supports Newmont’s mission to achieve zero harm for employees and communities.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and enforce safety policies aligned with Mozambican mining laws and ISO 45001 standards.
• Conduct regular site inspections to identify hazards and recommend corrective actions.
• Train mining personnel on emergency response procedures and equipment safety protocols.
• Investigate incidents and prepare detailed reports for regulatory bodies and internal stakeholders.
• Collaborate with environmental teams to ensure compliance with waste management and land rehabilitation guidelines.

Required Skills

• Proficiency in mining safety software (e.g., SafetyChain, MineSafe).
• Certification in OSHA or NEBOSH is a strong advantage.
• Fluency in Portuguese and English.
• Strong analytical skills for risk assessment and incident trend analysis.
• Excellent communication for stakeholder engagement and report writing.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health, Safety Engineering, or Mining Engineering. Postgraduate qualifications in Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) are preferred.

Experience

3-5 years in mining safety or occupational health roles, with a focus on open-pit or underground mining operations. Experience in East African mining sectors is advantageous.

Salary

1,500,000 – 2,500,000 MZN annually, commensurate with experience and certifications.
