Job Overview
The Senior Mine Safety Engineer will lead the development, implementation and monitoring of comprehensive safety programs for Anglo American’s mining operations in Beira. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, review and update mine safety policies, procedures and standards in line with best practices and regulatory requirements.
- Lead comprehensive risk assessments, hazard analyses and safety audits across all operational sites.
- Investigate incidents, near‑misses and accidents, producing detailed reports and recommending corrective actions.
- Provide technical safety guidance to project managers, supervisors and field personnel.
- Coordinate safety training programs, drills and emergency response simulations.
- Monitor compliance with local mining legislation, ISO standards and Anglo American’s internal safety framework.
- Collaborate with engineering, operations and environmental teams to integrate safety considerations into project design and execution.
- Prepare and present safety performance metrics to senior leadership and external stakeholders.
Required Skills
- Deep knowledge of mining safety regulations, standards (e.g., ISO 45001) and industry best practices.
- Proven experience in conducting risk assessments, root‑cause analysis and incident investigations.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities with a data‑driven approach.
- Excellent communication skills for delivering training, reports and stakeholder presentations.
- Leadership capability to influence cross‑functional teams and drive safety culture change.
- Proficiency with safety management software and data visualization tools.
- Fluency in English; Portuguese proficiency is an advantage.
Education
A Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering, Occupational Health & Safety, or a closely related field is required. Professional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) credentials are highly desirable and demonstrate a commitment to continuous professional development.
Experience
Applicants must have a minimum of ten years of progressive experience in mining safety engineering, with at least five years in a senior or lead capacity. Experience working in African mining environments, particularly within Mozambique, will be considered a strong asset. Demonstrated success in reducing incident rates and implementing robust safety management systems is essential.
Salary
The compensation package ranges from SSP 1,200,000 to SSP 1,800,000 per month, commensurate with experience, qualifications and performance. The package includes performance‑based bonuses, health insurance, pension contributions and other statutory benefits aligned with local labor regulations.
